    Separation of river network scale nitrogen removal among main channel and two transient storage compartments

    Reach scale experiments have shown that transient storage (TS) could be an important control on dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) export to coastal waters. Here, the relative roles the main channel (MC), surface TS (STS) and hyporheic TS (HTS) have in DIN removal at the network scale are investigated using a model applied to the Ipswich River in Massachusetts. Collaborative field investigations in 1st through 5th order reaches of the Ipswich River provided the mean and range for the hydraulic parameters controlling TS connectivity and residence time. DIN removal was simulated in the MC, STS and HTS compartments for every river grid cell using hydraulic characteristics, simulated discharge, and a constant reaction rate. Application of mean network parameters resulted in removal of 73.1% of total DIN inputs with the MC, HTS, and STS contributing 38.2%, 20.9%, and 14.0% respectively. Sensitivity analyses suggest large rivers and hotspots greatly impact DIN fluxes

    Convergence of the Many-Body Expansion of Interaction Potentials: From van der Waals to Covalent and Metallic Systems

    The many-body expansion of the interaction potential between atoms and molecules is analyzed in detail for different types of interactions involving up to seven atoms. Elementary clusters of Ar, Na, Si, and, in particular, Au are studied, using first-principles wave-function- and density-functional-based methods to obtain the individual n-body contributions to the interaction energies. With increasing atom number the many-body expansion converges rapidly only for long-range weak interactions. Large oscillatory behavior is observed for other types of interactions. This is consistent with the fact that Au clusters up to a certain size prefer planar structures over the more compact three-dimensional Lennard-Jones-type structures. Several Au model potentials and semi-empirical PM6 theory are investigated for their ability to reproduce the quantum results. We further investigate small water clusters as prototypes of hydrogen-bonded systems. Here, the many-body expansion converges rapidly, reflecting the localized nature of the hydrogen bond and justifying the use of two-body potentials to describe water-water interactions. The question of whether electron correlation contributions can be successfully modeled by a many-body interaction potential is also addressed

    Accuracy of a video odometry system for trains

    Reliable Data Systems is developing a video-based odometry system that enables trains to measure velocities and distances travelled without the need for trackside infrastructure. A camera is fixed in the cab, taking images of the track immediately ahead, at rates in the range 25–50 frames per second. The images in successive frames are ‘unwarped’ to provide a plan view of the track and then matched, to produce an ‘optical flow’ that measures the distance travelled. The Study Group was asked to investigate ways of putting bounds on the accuracy of such a system, and to suggest any improvements that might be made. The work performed in the week followed three strands: (a) an understanding of how deviations from the camera’s calibrated position lead to errors in the train’s calculated position and velocity; (b) development of models for the train suspension, designed to place bounds on these deviations; and (c) the performance of the associated image processing algorithms

    A neural based intelligent flight control system for the NASA F-15 flight research aircraft

    A flight control concept that can identify aircraft stability properties and continually optimize the aircraft flying qualities has been developed by McDonnell Aircraft Company under a contract with the NASA-Dryden Flight Research Facility. This flight concept, termed the Intelligent Flight Control System, utilizes Neural Network technology to identify the host aircraft stability and control properties during flight, and use this information to design on-line the control system feedback gains to provide continuous optimum flight response. This self-repairing capability can provide high performance flight maneuvering response throughout large flight envelopes, such as needed for the National Aerospace Plane. Moreover, achieving this response early in the vehicle's development schedule will save cost
